Dental Bridge or Partial Denture: Which One is Right For Me?

Dentures

Losing multiple teeth can affect much more than the appearance of your smile. Missing teeth can make chewing and speaking more difficult, allow surrounding teeth to shift, and leave you wondering what your best replacement option might be. Two common solutions are dental bridges and partial dentures. Both can restore your smile, but they work in different ways. So, how do you know which one you need?

How Dental Bridges Work

A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by filling the space with artificial teeth, called pontics. These replacement teeth are anchored to neighboring teeth or dental implants, depending on the type of bridge.

Traditional bridges use dental crowns placed over the teeth on either side of the gap. Because a bridge is fixed in place, you don’t remove it when eating or cleaning your teeth. This can make a bridge feel more like your natural teeth.

Bridges can be particularly useful when the missing teeth are next to one another and the surrounding teeth are healthy enough to support the restoration. They also help prevent neighboring teeth from drifting into the empty space.

What Is a Partial Denture?

A partial denture is a removable appliance designed to replace several missing teeth. It typically includes artificial teeth attached to a gum-colored base and may use clasps or other attachments to stay securely in place.

Unlike a bridge, you can take a partial denture out for cleaning and while you sleep. This makes it a flexible option for people who are missing several teeth in different areas of the mouth.

Partial dentures can also be a practical choice when a fixed bridge isn’t appropriate because of the number or location of missing teeth. They may replace multiple teeth while working with the remaining natural teeth.

Bridge vs. Partial Denture: Which Is Better?

Neither option is automatically better for everyone. The right choice depends on factors such as how many teeth you’re missing, where the gaps are located, the health of your remaining teeth and gums, and your preferences regarding a removable or fixed restoration.

A dental bridge may be appealing if you want a permanent-feeling restoration that stays in place. A partial denture may offer greater flexibility, particularly when you’re replacing several teeth that aren’t all next to each other.

Your dentist will also consider your overall oral health and the condition of the teeth that would support a bridge or partial denture. In some cases, other options, such as dental implants, may also be worth discussing.

Restoring Your Smile After Tooth Loss

Replacing missing teeth can make everyday activities like eating and speaking more comfortable while helping you feel more confident about your smile. If you’re deciding between a bridge and partial denture, a dental evaluation can help you understand which restoration makes the most sense for your needs.

The right tooth replacement can help you get back to enjoying your smile with confidence.
